Hybrid Minivans Are For Fuel Efficiency And Practicality

Generally, we have two main conditions we want satisfied why we say we want hybrid minivans more than any other car brand or make: fuel efficiency and usability.  Basically these are what the two words mean—hybrid=fuel efficiency; and usability=minivan.

Since we don’t see any hybrid minivans coming out of the American horizon anytime soon, we might as well go and check out the hybrid’s features and the features of other alternative brand and make that might satisfy the two conditions that we have set as requirements.

When looking for cars or minivans (hybrid minivans too) we should first consider the general driving conditions your prospective vehicle will be subjected to.  We are talking about your daily, or usual, driving routine.  This is important because gas mileage per gallon differs depending on your daily driving routine.  If your daily driving involves sending the kids to school, then off to the supermarket, then home, then picking the kids up, then home again—and all these are just within the confines of the city, you have better use of any of those hybrid minivans (if they are already available).

In city driving,  you get use of its electric drive, and its “regenerative braking” feature more.  The more traffic lights you encounter, the more you step on the brake, and the more you have idle time, the better it is for your car as it uses up its electric power source—not your gasoline.  When a hybrid car, or any of those hybrid minivans, idle during a red light, the engine automatically shuts off, saving you precious gasoline.  It automatically restarts easily without you doing anything except to step on the gas pedal.  When you step on the brake, the power that is not used to propel the car is redirected towards charging your battery.

Driving on the highway gives an entirely different result in terms of fuel savings in hybrid minivans or any other hybrid vehicle.  If your daily trip means a lot of time spent on the freeways, you are better off with looking for any other gasoline-only vehicle that should both be easy on the pocket in terms of the vehicle’s unit cost and in terms of its fuel efficiency.  You see, hybrid minivans or cars come at a slightly higher price compared to their gasoline-only counterparts.

In terms of practicality of use, a van, minivan, or multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) would be ideal as these types of vehicles offer ample seating capacity, large storage space, and several other features such as sliding door, or the swivelling chairs could come in handy for family use.  Sad to say, the dearth of hybrid minivans have made a lot of moms opt for the much larger SUV or its smaller crossover versions.

If the above conditions that need to justify your buying a hybrid vehicle does not exist, especially that hybrid minivans are not even available yet, you may consider regular vehicles that also offer better gas mileage.

You may get tax breaks with a hybrid, you may get free parking in city meters but if you seldom get the chance to maximize the electric use of your hybrid in interstate roads, the sum total of what you save on gasoline would not be enough to cover for the premium price one pays for any of those hybrid minivans.
